Journey to the Den of the Cave Bears - Bossea Grottoes

The Grottoes of Bossea are an amazing, impressive, natural karst formation in northern Italy, in the province of Cuneo, bewitching with its pristine beauty.

Explored   at the beginning of the 19th century, the Bossea caves were the first underground attractions in Italy, open to the public  in 1874. In 1948, with the installation of an electric lighting system, interest in underground tourism increases sharply.  

Since 2011, the caves have been protected by the Piedmont Regional Reservation Park (Riserva naturale delle Grotte di Bossea).

Grottoes are a system of caves, halls, passages, underground rivers and lakes. Here you can see giant stone blocks of bizarre shapes, many stalagmite columns, stalactites and calcium formations. The length of the caves is approximately 2 km, and the depth   is about 700 m.

Bossea Grottoes are one of the most interesting such formations in Italy and are famous for the paleontological remains of cave bears found here, which used this place to give birth to offspring  and lethargic sleep in the period from 80,000 to 12,000 years ago. Until now, on some walls of the caves, you can see traces of the claws of these extinct predators.

Visiting the caves is carried out with a guide in Italian or English languages with the translation of the escort.
